Paintings from BalgoBalgo Hills Paintings - Art from Wirrimanu

Gwion

Artists from the Wirrimanu (Balgo Hills) community in far north Western Australia have created one of the most distinctive regional styles in Aboriginal art, renowned for its brilliant colours and strong designs, including complex layered dotted images. For more information, see our pages on Balgo art and artists and on Balgo artists.

We have arranged with the Balgo community art centre to offer a selection of paintings at a significant reduction on their usual price! The paintings come with a Warlayirti Artists certificate of authenticity. For more information about Balgo art, see our pages on Balgo art and artists.

All paintings on these sale pages are being offered at least 20 % below their normal price - but only until 31 March 2013 (or while available). The prices shown below include the discount.

Paintings can be bought immediately - there is no need to check availability - and sales will be made to the first person to commit to purchase.

Please note that paintings will be sent from Balgo and will arrive two to three weeks after you have placed your order (one week longer overseas).

The prices below are in Australian dollars and do not include packing, shipping and insurance. To check the equivalent price in other currencies, use the Currency Conversion link.

Note that works from the Balgo art centre are exempt from Australian GST, so the prices shown below for Australia and export are the same (unlike on some other parts of our Web site). Bai Bai Napangarti
Title: Lake Mackay

PA133, 2009

Bai Bai depicts an important bush food, Mulupuku that can be found in her country around Lake Mackay, south of Balgo. The lines represent the tali (hills) where native grasses grow in the wet season. It is from this landscape that the women gather seeds. The seeds are then washed several times before they are ground to make a flour-like substance used to make damper. The areas on either side of the central white area in the painting illustrate the ground that leads to the swamp.

Nora Wompi
Title: Kunawarritji
Price: $920.00 in Australia and Export.
PA102, 2012
Acrylic on canvas
45 x 60 cm
Nora's work shows her traditional country near Kunawarritji Community (Well 33), far to the south west of Balgo along the middle stretches of the Canning Stock Route. While the lineal patterns in the painting represent the tali (sand hills) that dominate this country, the circular shapes represent the scarce rockholes (waterholes) dotted throughout the desert. According to Nora, this is good country for collecting bush foods including pura (bush tomato) and kantjilyi (bush raisin).

Title: Winpurpurla
Price: $1900.00 in Australia and Export.
PA138, 2004
Acrylic on linen
80 x 120 cm
Carmel has painted some of her mother's country south of Balgo in the Great Sandy Desert. This country here is named Winpurpurla after the tjurrnu (soakwater) shown as the central circle. Winpurpurla is an inta, or 'living water' place so it always has good water. Women travel to Winpurpurla to collect a variety of seeds including lukarrari which is ground to make damper as well as kumpupatja (bush tomato) and karnti (bush potato).
