Aboriginal prints are an attractive and affordable
form of Australian Aboriginal art. Artists have
expanded rapidly in their use of print making as
a form of artistic expression.
There is now a wide range of etchings, screenprints
and other limited edition works by both established
and emerging artists from communities in the Kimberley,
Central and Western Desert and Top End (including
Arnhem Land) regions of Australia.
Prints are arranged by regions - click on the
link to see works from a particular region. If you
want to read a short biography of the one of the

Majardi Jukurrpa - Ceremonial Dancing Skirt Dreaming |

This print of Majarrdi Jukurrpa (ceremonial dancing skirts) tells the story of an important element in much of Warlpiri ceremonial activity. ‘Majarrdi’ is a hair-string belt or skirt that ‘karnta’ (women) wear for ceremonial dances called Yawulyu. Hair is rolled into a string using a rubbing technique on the thigh and spun onto a stick spindle and then made into a belt or skirt. In the time of the Jukurrpa ancestral hero women were living at Mina-Mina, far to the west of Yuendumu. The women travelled over their country performing ceremonies and dances wearing their ‘majarrdi’. |

This print is about a story that takes place at Mount Theo (also known as Puturlu), north of Yuendumu. Two Napanangka women and two Napangardi women are looking for Ngalyipii (snake vine) which is used to make rope. This vine also has several other purposes. It could be used as a strap to carry parraja (food containers- also known as coolamons), as a tourniquet, or as a ceremonial rope when making witi poles. The wavy lines represent Ngalyipi and the circles depict Wapunungu (gum trees) that ngalyipi climbs around. The oval shapes depict parrajas. The Kanta (women) are shown as “U” shapes at the top and bottom of the image. |

Yarlukari Jukurrpa |
| Price: |
$500.00 in Australia and Export. |
| PR804, 2003 |
| Screenprint, edition size 80 |
| 49 x 70 cm |

|
The Jukurrpa story associated with Yarlukari (to the west of Yuendumu) tells of the emus who came from the east and travelled through Yarlukari to Mikanji. They were travelling through dry land until they reached Yarlukari. Darby has painted the emus dancing around the waterholes. The other concentric circles represent the many waterholes in the area. The Jampijinpa and Jangala Emu (Yankirri) Dreaming is a men’s story and much of it is private. Darby almost took two years to complete this complex screenprint which involved 12 separate sheets of acetate. |

Ngalyipi Jukurrpa - Snake Vine Dreaming |

This Jukurrpa comes from Mina Mina far to the west of Yuendumu. In the Dreaming women danced at Mina Mina and digging sticks rose up out of the ground. The women collected these up and travelled on, dancing and creating many places. The central motif of this work is Ngalyipi, or snake vine, a rope-like creeper used as a ceremonial wrap. The circles represent Jintiparnta, native truffle, which the women gathered for sustenance on their long journey which eventually took them beyond Warlpiri country. |

Janganpa Jukurrpa - Possum Dreaming |
| Price: |
$420.00 in Australia and Export. |
| PR807, 2005 |
| Screenprint, edition size 30 |
| 49 x 70 cm |

The country associated with this painting is Mawurrjii, a water soakage created in the Dreamtime by a Janganpa (possum) ancestor. The concentric circles represent hollow trees, where the possums nested. The E-shapes represent the tracks left by the possums. Women with their digging sticks, hunt the possums as they leave their nests. Janganpa are nocturnal animals which travel at night in search of food and water. They are now rarely found in Central Australia, it is speculated as a result of the introduction of feral cats. |

Ngapa Jukurrpa - Water Dreaming |

The country associated with this Ngapa Jukurrpa (water Dreaming) is Mikanji, a watercourse that is usually dry, west of Yuendumu. In this creek bed there are ‘mulju’ (soakages). The Dreaming travelled from Puyurru, northwest of Yuendumu to a ‘mulju’ in the Mikanji creek. By the side of the soakages two old blind women were sitting. A rain ancestor travelled to Mikanji from Puyurru and unleashed a huge storm. As the two women strained their eyes to see the sky, tears formed in their eyes, creating the rain. Their spirits can still be seen at Mikanji in the form of two ‘ngapiri’ (river red gums) growing near the soakage. |
