Prints
|
|
|
Aboriginal prints are an attractive and affordable
form of Australian Aboriginal art. Artists have
expanded rapidly in their use of print making as
a form of artistic expression.
There is now a wide range of etchings, screenprints
and other limited edition works by both established
and emerging artists from communities in the Kimberley,
Central and Western Desert and Top End (including
Arnhem Land) regions of Australia.
Prints are arranged by regions - click on the
link to see works from a particular region. If you
want to read a short biography of the one of the
artists, go to the Art
and Artists section of our Website. |

Lake Tobin, between Wells 38 and 39 on the Canning Stock Route, is part of an ancient river system and is the largest of a chain of lakes, known as the Percival Lakes. The Shoesmith Cliffs nearby provide the runoff water for the system. With large stands of desert oaks providing shade, it is a popular stopping place for desert travellers. Rover has depicted the trees interspersed with large termite mounds along the high watermark. |

Body Design I - Djilbunyamorr Waterhole |

Johnny Bulunbulun is a senior member of the Ganalbingu group and is one of the most important singers and ceremonial men in north-central Arnhem Land. His clan lands lie in the Arafura Swamp area. This print shows the Waterhole Djilbunyamorr where Bulunblun's two brothers and one sister (deceased) were spiritually conceived. Bulubulun's mother and father were out hunting geese, and as they walked past this waterhole, the spirit of gumand, the magpie goose, came out and impregnated the mother. Djilibunyamorr was created in the beginning of time by gumang the magpie goose. It is located in the Arafura Swamp region, in the bottom, seaward area, called Gunbarranga. The central horizontal bar represents a dead log at a place called Junggibarparnyamurru. This log is extremely sacred for the Ganalbingu who are the only ones allowed to paint it. The cross-hatched borders represent the expanses of Ganalbingu country. The two orange cone-like shapes are painted over the shoulders, representing fire and the fire spirits, or jongke, which burn under the water. The two circular shapes refer to these spirits. |
