Urban Aboriginal art has developed in
parallel with the rapid growth in Aboriginal art activity
in more remote areas.
Artists in urban settings and in the
larger Australian cities during the 1960s and 1970s began
using art as a means of powerful social comment and political
expression. Their work looks to Aboriginal sources for
inspiration and is informed by Western, and occasionally
other, art traditions. For more general information, see
our pages on Urban Aboriginal
art and Urban artist biographies.
The works below are by the artist Arone Meeks, a distinguished painter and print maker from Cairns in north east Queensland. For more information about Arone see the Biography of Arone Meeks.
Information about Arone and other Queensland Aboriginal
artists is contained in the book Gatherings,
available from our online shop.
