Jane has depicted Kinyu, her mother’s country located in the Great Sandy Desert, south west of Balgo. This country is very important: it attracts people and animals from the surrounding tali (sand hills) because it is full of mangarri (food). Small family groups have been travelling in this country for a long time. They go from one spot to another, hunting in the day and sleeping around the different rock holes (circular shapes) during the night. |

A long time ago in Tjukurrpa (Dreamtime) when there was no sand dunes, two men were rolling around making sand dunes. When they were pulling each other’s hair blood was coming out. It made the sand red. |

This is Lucy's country a long way south of Balgo close to Punmu in the Great Sandy Desert. This country is called Nyakungtjuungku and is part of the artist’s dreaming. The circle is a tjurrnu, or soakwater, known as inta, or 'living water' as it always holds fresh water. Loomoo says this country is rich with bush tucker. The dotting surrounding the circle represents these bush foods including kantilli or pura (bush tomato). |
