Kimberley Rock Art: Volume 1 Mitchell Plateau Region

Rock art of the Kimberley region in northern Western Australia is some of the world's most spectacular and ancient rock art, but much of it is remote and rarely seen. It is characterised by ancient ‘Gwion Gwion’ figures, some of which have been dated as being at least 17000 years old, and remarkable Wandjina figures as old as 4000 years.

This is the first of 3 volumes covering the rock art of the Kimberley, the culmination of 20 years of documentation and photography by the author Mike Donaldson while walking through some of the most remote and beautiful country in Australia.

This richly illustrated book is devoted to the rock art of the Mitchell Plateau area in the central Kimberley. It contains more than 600 images of the art and its setting, arranged by the major rivers of the area. All images have been approved for publication by the Wunambal Gaambera traditional owners.

The book includes a foreword by Dr Ian Crawford and a comprehensive introduction covering early descriptions of the art and brief summaries of archaeology, geology and the importance of past sea-level changes.

It is in large hard cover format (27 by 27 cm) and has 528 pages. It is section-sewn and case-bound, with an Introduction and Appendix.

Volume 1 (and volumes 2 and 3) is available in our Online Shop.
