Prints from the KimberleyPrints from the Kimberley

Gwion

Kimberley prints have the same strong and distinctive style as Kimberley painting. Many prints follow the classic Kimberley painting style of using flat areas of ochre colouring, silhouette forms and marking of outlines with white or pale ochre dots, while others are based on images with long cultural traditions such as the Wandjina images.

All prints are for sale and are warranted by us to be as described (see the Shopping and online security policy). The prices shown are in Australian dollars - to check the equivalent price in other currencies, use the Currency Conversion link. For more details, see our Help section.

Freddie Timms
Title: Purnululu - Picaninny Gorge
Price: $902.00 in Australia
$820.00 for Export.
PR506, 2003
Multi-plate etching, edition size 99
61 x 45 cm
The Bungle Bungle Range in Purnululu National Park, located in the East Kimberley, is one of the most extraordinary landforms in Western Australia. Around Picaninny Gorge the range is cut by deep gullies and breaks up into areas of ridges and beehive shaped domes with distinctive orange and black or grey bands. These bands are made up of sandstones and conglomerates (rocks composed of pebbles and boulders) that have been cemented together over time. In Kija, the Aboriginal language of the area, Purnululu means sandstone. The name Bungle Bungle is either a corruption of an Aboriginal name for the area or a misspelling of one of the common Kimberley grasses found here, bundle bundle grass. Picaninny Creek, dissects these famous structures and drains the area from the torrential downpours, forming the hundred metre deep, slab-sided gorge as it cuts through the sandstone. Freddy's unique view depicts the multi coloured outcrops, and the creek, as it enters the gorge.

Title: Joolabun (Dog Dreaming)
Price: $990.00 in Australia
$900.00 for Export.
PR507, 1997
Screenprint
69 x 59 cm
The east Kimberley cattle station Bedford Downs, Freddie's birthplace, is featured in this print. The black-coloured Ant Creek emerges from the high 'top country', and runs down past black soil plain, yellow, spinifex studded, flat country, and the red-ochred Baalguny lands to continue through neighbouring Bow River station, and on to drain into Bow River, and ultimately, the Ord River. These are the lands on which the young Freddie rode and was taught the skills by his mentor, the famous Bow River stockman, Bandy Boy. This man also endowed many of his secrets to the young Rover Thomas. Bandy Boy tells the story of the packs of marauding dogs, also known as dingoes, maranji, or joolany, in the area Joolabun, which would keep the men and the cattle awake when they made camp on the long cattle drive to Wyndham.

Title: Lake Tobin
Price: $1815.00 in Australia

PR527, 1999
Screenprint, Edition size 99

Lake Tobin, between Wells 38 and 39 on the Canning Stock Route, is part of an ancient river system and is the largest of a chain of lakes, known as the Percival Lakes. The Shoesmith Cliffs nearby provide the runoff water for the system. With large stands of desert oaks providing shade, it is a popular stopping place for desert travellers. Rover has depicted the trees interspersed with large termite mounds along the high watermark.

Title: Wandjina IV
Price: $484.00 in Australia
$440.00 for Export.
PR504, 1999
Screenprint, edition size 99
76 x 56 cm
Wandjina can be seen in the passing of the dry season to ‘the wet’ in the form of vast billowing white clouds. In the late afternoon the rumbling of thunder and flash of lightning within the vast billowing clouds overhead mean that the long, hot build up of heat and humidity will break and once again the rain cycle will commence. In days when Aboriginal people were ruled by spirits of the land, the ‘build up’ was the source of ceremonial tribute, representing not only rebirth and growth, but also the cruelty of the storm and flood.

PR502, 1998
Screenprint, Edition size 99

Most Wandjina images are found within the clan estates of the Ngarinyin people in the North Kimberley. Every Wandjina rock art image 'belongs' to one of the clans of the region, and the stories, songs, rights and responsibilities associated with that image are handed down through the generations.
