Prints from the Balgo Hills (Wirrimanu) community in
far north Western Australia are increasingly sought after
by collectors. Some of Australia's best known senior Aboriginal
artists, such as Eubena (Yupinya) Nampitjin, Elizabeth
Nyumi, Tjumpo Tjapanangka, Helicopter and Boxer Milner
have in recent years turned to printmaking as a medium
of artistic expression alongside working on canvas.
We also have paintings (in the Balgo
paintings pages) by most of the artists who made the
prints shown below. For more information about the artists,
you can read short biographies.

Lucy has depicted some of Lucy 's grandmother's country located far to the south of Balgo, in the Great Sandy Desert. This print features some of the country around a tjurrnu, or soakwater called Winpurpurla. Winpurpurla is an inta, or 'living water' place in that it always has good water. The Tjukurrpa (Dreamtime) story for this country tells of some ancestral women of the Nungurrayi, Nampitjin and Napangardi skin groups who came to camp at Winpurpula. These ancestral women made a fire close to the water, and started dancing a secret/sacred dance. The dancing went all night after which they started walking a long way west. The woman came to Winpurpurla to collect some of the special food that grows here, in particular the murlanpa, a flower harvested from the 'sugar tree', which is eaten raw and is a great delicacy.

Elizabeth has depicted her father's country known as Parwalla. It is located far to the south of Balgo in the Great Sandy Desert, west of the community of Kiwirrkurra. The landscape of the area is dominated by tali or sand hills. Parwalla is swampy, filling a huge area with water after the wet season rain. These wet season rains result in an abundance of good bush tucker. Depicted here is kantilli, or bush raisin surrounded by tali or sand hills. Both men and women collect bush raisins with each other. |
