Paintings from the Tiwi IslandsTiwi Art - Paintings from the Tiwi Islands

Gwion
Tiwi art and language are markedly distinct from those of nearby Arnhem Land. Compared with Arnhem Land art, Tiwi art often appears abstract and geometric. With its strong patterns and use of colour, Tiwi art is recognised as being very attractive and highly collectable.

There is no 'story' as such for individual paintings, in the way that there often is for paintings from other parts of Australia. The main themes relate to the two main Tiwi ceremonial events (the annual Kulama or yam ceremony and the Pukumani or mortuary ceremony) and to pwoja (body painting). For information, see our pages on Tiwi culture and Tiwi Creation stories.

The prices below are in Australian dollars and do not include packing, shipping and insurance - use the "Enquire" button to confirm availability of a painting and the cost of shipping.
