Paintings from Papunya Tula Artists

Papunya Tula Artists is an Aboriginal cooperative owned by the artists who are Pintupi and Luritja speaking people from the western deserts of central Australia. The establishment of the company in 1972 was the starting point for the emergence of the Western Desert art movement.

Papunya Tula Artists are recognized for the continuing excellence and cultural strength of their art. Their painting style derives directly from knowledge of traditional body and sand painting associated with ceremonies.

Since the company was established at Papunya, many Pintupi and Luritja people have moved back to their homelands and the centre of activities is now at Kintore (Walungurru), a further 300 km west in the Gibson Desert.

All of the paintings below are from Papunya Tula Artists and come with the certificate of authenticity issued by the community art centre.

Martin Tjampitjinpa

This painting relates to the claypan site of Muyinga, slightly west of Kintore. In mythological times a group of Tingari men camped at this site as they travelled towards the west, later arriving at an important site known as Ngurrapulangu. This is a low lying area situated at the base of a long escarpment which consists of a number of huge claypans. The many small roundels represent the soakages and rockholes that the men visited at sites further west, which included the well know site of Umari. Martin Tjampitjinpa was one of the most distinguished of the younger Papunya Tula artists. This work comes with a certificate from Papunya Tula Artists. A copy of the booklet accompanying his commemorative exhibition in 2007 is also included.

Naata Nungarrayi

The central design in this painting represents the rockhole and soakage water site of Marrapinti, to the west of the Pollock Hills in Western Australia. The lines represent the sandhills surrounding the site. A large group of senior women camped at this rockhole making the nose-bones which are worn through a hole in the nose-web. These nose-bones were originally worn by both men and women but are now only worn by the older generation on ceremonial occasions. The women later travelled east passing through Wala Wala, Ngaminya and Kiwirkurra.
