Kimberley art has a strong and distinctive style. Works
by artists such as Rover Thomas, Queenie McKenzie, Jack
Britten and others is identifiable by its use of flat
areas of thick ochre, silhouette forms and marking of
outlines with white or pale ochre dots. Their style
continues in the work of artists from Warmun
(Turkey Creek).
Other artists have maintained their cultural traditions
of painting wandjina images on bark and other materials,
while other artists or communities use modern materials
to produce brightly coloured works in acrylic. Our Web site offers a good range of high quality Kimberley
paintings which span much of the variety of styles.

Dungurrninning (the earthquake) |

$15000.00 in Australia and Export. |

| Natural ochres on linen |
| 150 x 100 cm |

The east Kimberley cattle station Texas Downs is the setting for Jack's dreamtime story of Dungurrninning. The old people were by tradition the first to feast on the succulent fat grubs under the bark of the white river gum trees. On one occasion, the young people broke the law and ate all of the grubs. A huge black cloud suddenly developed overhead, causing a deluge of water never before seen - the ground opened up beneath their feet, and all were washed into the abyss (seen at top right of the work). Part of the ground didn't close up and can be seen today on that part of Texas station known as Gnargroon Country, in the form of the huge gorge Dungurrninning. |

| PA355, 2005 |

Born on the banks of the Sturt Creek on the northern edge of the Great Sandy Desert, Nellie grew up and worked as a housekeeper on Sturt Creek Station until the late 1960s. Every wet season when the rains come Sturt Creek fills and begins to flow, filling thousands of waterholes along the way widening as it makes its way into the Great Sandy Desert then it stops abruptly as it fills Lake Gregory. The painting shows a myriad of connecting channels and full waterholes - depicted with the inner circle, these waterholes will become crucial sources of food and water when the water recedes in the dry years that might follow. |

In the Dreamtime the Spotted Nightjar (a small nocturnal bird of prey) or Yoorngoo Dagu Dagu tried to build a nest but none of the other animals would let her. They kept stealing her nesting materials. In the end, Yoorngoo Dagu Dagu laid her eggs on open ground. So as to protect her young from danger, Yoorngoo Dagu Dagu marked out circular boundaries and said to the young ones 'you stay in here and don't go over the line'. However, a big flood came and all the babies drowned. From that moment on and until today, when Yoorngoo Dagu Dagu marks out the territory for its young it leaves an opening so that they can escape in case of flooding. |
