Paintings from IkuntjiPaintings from Ikuntji - Haasts Bluff

Gwion

Ikuntji, or Haasts Bluff as it is also known, is located 230 kms west of Alice Springs. The Ikuntji Art Centre has 15 to 20 key artists who exhibit around Australia and overseas. Some of the best known artists include Narputta Nangala, Eunice Napanangka Jack and Alice Nampitjinpa.

We are fortunate in being able to offer, in conjunction with the Ikuntji community art centre, a selection of paintings by established and emerging Ikuntji artists. More information about the centre is available on our Ikuntji Art centre page and short biographies are available on the Ikuntji artists pages.

Anmanari Napanangka
Title: Mulpu
Price: $2390.00 in Australia and Export.
PA963, 2006
Acrylic on linen canvas
122 x 166 cm
This work shows the artist's personal Tjukurrpa, the Mulpu (native mushroom), as it was handed to her by her mother. The Mulpu grow after the seasonal rains along the creek and river banks. The painting tells how to find them and how to cook them in an earth stove with a lot of sand. Mulpu represent good times out in the desert, and a time for celebration as the landscape comes alive with bush tucker of all sorts. "After the rain comes the bush mushroom sprouting from the ground, we pick them and they are delicious to eat." Anmanari came to have the Mulpu as her personal law because her mother was eating the mulpu on the night that Anmanari was born, causing a quickening of the pregnancy. In her paintings the artist likes as well to depict women digging for the mushrooms with their traditional tools, their coolamons and nulla nullas.

Title: Karrinyarra
Price: $690.00 in Australia and Export.
PA953, 2011
Acrylic on linen canvas
100 x 100 cm
This work depicts designs connected to the sacred site of Karrinyarra, to the north of Papunya. This is a Kapi Tjukurrpa (Water Dreaming) and Yalka Tjukurrpa (Bush Onion) place. This is a place where the women collect yalka. Concentric circles represent waterholes or yalka. Often women are depicted as U shapes, with their wana or digging stick and oval shaped coolamon by their side. Bush onions may be eaten raw or cooked after removing the hard casing. They are a small onion sedge with corms on shallow roots, the size of a small shallot. The women would perform a traditional ceremony in honour of the Bush Onion where they dance and paint their breast, chest and forearms in ceremonial body designs. They also decorate their bodies with feathers and dance with ceremonial objects such as nulla nullas.
