The paintings below are by Central Desert Arrernte artists who work at the Irrkerlantye art and community centre in Alice Springs. They have held a number of successful exhibitions of their work since 1999 and they are now expanding their access to potential buyers of their work by offering it through our Web site.

Kurkati, tinka, milpali or sand goannas live in the sandhills and plains country and have always been an important source of kuka (meat) for the Anangu (Aboriginal people) of this area. They are still hunted in spring and summer time when they have ended their underground hibernation and can easily be tracked across the red sand. They are the most widely carved animals and this walka board indicates its significance to the Anangu. Walka is a desert design and inextricably linked with Tjukurpa (the law and way of life of the Anangu). The symbols were traditionally used in cave, ground and body painting, in story telling, teaching and signalling inheritance.
