Artists from the Wirrimanu
(Balgo Hills) community in far north Western Australia
have created one of the most distinctive regional styles
in Aboriginal art, renowned for its brilliant colours
and strong designs, including complex layered dotted
images.

Theresa is the third daughter born to Brandy Tjungurrayi and Nowee Nangala. |

The work depicts the different features of the country including the tali (sand hills), spinifex and desert trees as well as pura (bush tomatoes) and kantjilyi (bush raisins). The central circle is a warniri (rock hole). Theresa is the daughter of Brandy Tjungurrayi. |

Eubena has painted some of her country south west of Balgo along the middle stretches of the Canning Stock Route. The majority of the painting shows the tali (sandhills) that dominate this country. The central circle is Tjurrnu (soakwater) named Midjul. This is the country where Kinyu the spirit dog lives. Eubena would often cover Midjul with leaves so Kinyu wouldn't come out and would also leave gifts of goanna for Kinyu. |

Nora's work depicts her traditional country near Kunawarritji Community (Well 33), far to the south west of Balgo along the middle stretches of the Canning Stock Route. The lines in the painting represent the tali (sand hills) that dominate this country. This is good country for collecting bush foods including pura (bush tomato) and kantjilyi (bush raisin). The circular shapes represent rockholes, as sources of water dotted throughout the desert. |

Veronica, or Fatima, as she is also known, has painted a big bush tucker, or mungarri, story for the country surrounding her community in Mulan, west of Balgo. Featured here are karnti (bush potato), kunandro (bush bean), tjirrilpatja (bush carrot), pinanyee (water lily nut), ngarlukutu (bush coconut), tjunda (bush onion) and koolipi (bush banana). In addition a series of nuts and berries, such as witjirki, pungunana, pirwa, warani and karlpa are also depicted. |

Helicopter has painted some of his country south of Balgo, in the Great Sandy Desert. This country is named Wangkartu after the tjurrnu (soakwater) featured in the centre of the painting. Wangkartu is an inta (living water) so always contains drinking water. The parallel lines in the painting represent the tali (sandhills) that dominate the country. This is the country where Helicopter was born. |

Ann has depicted her mother's country Nynmi, on the Canning Stock Route in the Great Sandy Desert. The country is centred on Minyilpa Warniri (rockhole) and the central circle indicates Minyilpa. Ann's mother would walk between these places collecting seeds and hunting for bushtucker. Ann is the daughter of Brandy Tjungarrayi. |

Miriam has depicted a story told by her uncle Wimmitji which took place in Tjatjati, north of Jupiter Well. In the centre there are two eggs which were sung by marparn men (healers) in a big Tingari (dreaming) ceremony. This ceremony called upon the native cat spirit near a sacred rockhole also depicted in the centre. This ceremony resulted with two babies who were born from the eggs. The oval shapes surrounding the eggs represent the marparn men. |
