Peter has painted his father's country which is south east of Yagga Yagga, Piparr. The painting depicts a Tjukurrpa (Dreamtime) story which explains the creation of five rockholes in the region. In the Tjukurrpa the people were forced to crawl on their knees and it was the marks of their knees in the ground that formed the rockholes. These rockholes are seen as the black circles in the painting. These ancestral beings all died when they fell into a fire during the Tjukurrpa. This is talis or sand dune country. This region is rich with the bush tucker called karnti or bush potato. The area is burnt for hunting and regeneration symbolised by the orange dots. |

Gracie Greene |
| Title: |
Tjalapa and Luurnkurta |
| Price: |
$550.00 in Australia and Export. |
| PA103, 2010 |
| Acrylic on linen |
| 75 x 50 cm |
|
|
This work depicts one of the Tjukurrpa (Dreamtime) stories for Gracie's country, south and south west of Balgo. For a long time two different lizards, Tjalapa (a skink) and Luurnkurta (Blue Tongue) lived together as good friends. One day they went their own ways to have their babies, before coming together again. Tjalapa began to make fun of the Luurnkurta's babies, teasing the mother and the babies, calling them ugly and telling them they all had big heads, and showing off the beauty of her own children. This shamed the Luurnkurta, who turned itself into a hill, called Kartamarta, which means big head. |
