Gracie Greene
Title: Tjalapa and Luurnkurta
Price: $550.00 in Australia and Export.
PA103, 2010
Acrylic on linen
75 x 50 cm
This work depicts one of the Tjukurrpa (Dreamtime) stories for Gracie's country, south and south west of Balgo. For a long time two different lizards, Tjalapa (a skink) and Luurnkurta (Blue Tongue) lived together as good friends. One day they went their own ways to have their babies, before coming together again. Tjalapa began to make fun of the Luurnkurta's babies, teasing the mother and the babies, calling them ugly and telling them they all had big heads, and showing off the beauty of her own children. This shamed the Luurnkurta, who turned itself into a hill, called Kartamarta, which means big head.
