Peter has painted his father's country which is south east of Yagga Yagga, Piparr. The painting depicts a Tjukurrpa (Dreamtime) story which explains the creation of five rockholes in the region. In the Tjukurrpa the people were forced to crawl on their knees and it was the marks of their knees in the ground that formed the rockholes. These rockholes are seen as the black circles in the painting. These ancestral beings all died when they fell into a fire during the Tjukurrpa. This is talis or sand dune country. This region is rich with the bush tucker called karnti or bush potato. The area is burnt for hunting and regeneration symbolised by the yellow dots. |

Gracie has painted some women's country, located south of Balgo, in the Great Sandy Desert. This country is known as Walkali, named for the soakwater that forms in the kiliki, or creek, which is shown at the top of the painting. In the Tjukurrpa (Dreamtime) ancestral women were travelling from the west, and came to Walkali, singing their way through the country. At Walkali they stopped, and sat by the waterhole - the various U shapes - to rest. They continued to travel, collecting young girls and bush tucker as they went. They taught the girls as they travelled. |
